Digital Detox Day - Q&A with Jordan Stephens

Digital Detox Day is a campaign set-up between mental health organisation #IAMWHOLE, Zoe Sugg and Lush. The campaign raises awareness about the negative impact social media can have on our mental health, and helps people to form healthier relationships with their devices. Here, musician and co-founder of #IAMWHOLE, Jordan Stephens, gives us his thoughts on why taking a break from social media on Digital Detox Day is more pertinent than ever.

What is Digital Detox Day?

Digital Detox Day is providing people with an opportunity to feel free. It’s encouraging people to build a healthier relationship with their phones, making sure that as we all technologically advance through this bizarre and brief existence we also hold on to our humanity.

Tell us more about #IAMWHOLE - how did you come up with the idea for the organisation? What are some of your proudest #IAMWHOLE achievements?

#IAMWHOLE was born out of me writing a song about spiralling into depression, which is the way songwriting works - it was how I felt at the time. Then, through some wonderful chance meetings and serendipity, the collaboration with Spirit media was birthed. I think the first year of the campaign going live was a massive achievement and I’m very proud of that. Second to that would be Music For Mental Health, which again was an incredible achievement.

How did you first get involved with the Digital Detox Day campaign?

After Music For Mental Health, #IAMWHOLE was invited to give evidence to a panel at the House Of Lords on the importance of music in society. While we were there, we got talking to some people from LUSH who were at the time working with Zoe to create a bath bomb raising funds for mental health charities. The stars aligned, and we decided to band together to create a SUPER CAMPAIGN!

What is it about the Digital Detox Day campaign that you feel so passionately about?

I really think it’s important for human beings to connect to the world around them and not just necessarily connect to virtual spaces. I think it’s about balance and I worry that we’re too sucked in.

Why is it important to you to take time away from your phone occasionally?

Because often our phones can present themselves as a means to escape how we feel, but we’re not actually processing how we feel.

Time alone around nature to actually feel your body is really important as well. For all of us it’s a lot easier to just distract ourselves with a screen, but it’s imperative that we connect with our emotions

Do you have any top tips on how to create more positive habits around your use of social media and digital devices?

Have more than one Digital Detox Day! And walk...walking is underrated. Go for a walk near trees.

What are you planning on doing with your Digital Detox Day?

I’m planning on reading. Reading a real book with real pages.

This is a great idea and an amazing achievement to get this all up and running. I hope there are more detox days, I didn't find out about this until halfway through the 5th. Thanks for all your hard work!
