Imagine being in a dangerous situation, and you can’t check if your family is safe. Your business is disabled. Or you’re seriously injured, but the emergency services can’t share the vital communications that could save your life. Imagine you’ve just seen something that the world needs to know about, but you can’t get online to tell anyone. The government is controlling what you see, and you’re only getting half the picture. For many who have been at the centre of an internet shutdown, this is the reality.
Governments all around the world are instructing internet service providers to block internet access - during protests, elections, and even school exams. People are being silenced, so it’s time to speak up.
Break the silence
In December 2016, there’s an opportunity to do just that. The world’s governments will be gathering in Guadalajara, Mexico, to discuss the future of the open internet. More than 3,000 participants from around the world will join the meeting, making this a critical moment to urge our leaders to speak out against internet shutdowns. If you want your voice to be heard, sign the petition asking world leaders to keep the internet on. The petition will be delivered on 7th December 2016.
But there’s no need to stop there. Let your voice carry even further, by using the hashtag #KeepItOn. Take to social media, snap yourself with the Error 404 bath bomb, and tell the world why the internet is better left on.
Bathing for freedom
Error 404 is the bath bomb fighting internet shutdowns. All the profits from this exclusive product go to the Digital Fund. You can pick one up in store or online from Black Friday (25th November 2016), but they won’t be around for long. Take everything off to bathe. Where the internet is concerned however - keep it on.
Digital rights are for life, not just for Black Friday. By supporting Error 404, you’ll leave behind the legacy of the Digital Fund, a pot of money to support grassroots digital activists who are keeping the internet free, open and safe. Access Now is one of those groups, defending and extending the digital rights of users at risk around the world. They use policy, advocacy and technology to fight for secure and open communications for all of us. They’re at the forefront of the fight to #KeepItOn, and they invite you to join them.
Internet shutdowns leave people in the dark.
