Harnaam Kaur: On Tour in Berlin

As part of her #MyBodyMyRules tour around Europe, Body Positivity icon Harnaam Kaur visited us in Berlin. Lush Berlin gave audiences the opportunity to ask her questions via Instagram to find out things you have always wanted to know from her. You asked - and Harnaam answered.

Are you an eagle or a clam? How strong are you in your opinion?
HK:
I feel like an eagle. I have no limits and feel very free and liberated, and I think that I am definitely a strong person.

How can I become self confident and learn to love myself and my body?
HK:
Speak kindly to yourself and about yourself, ignore other people's negative opinions about you, I would recommend that you follow the path of happiness. Do all the things that you love and live by the motto #MyBodyMyRules.

Do you have any siblings? And if yes, how do they handle your fame?
HK:
I would definitely not say that I am famous, but I receive a lot of products, most of all Lush products (which are my favourite), and my brother likes to sneak into my room to steal my R&B hair moisturiser and my bath products.

How do people react to your extraordinary appearance?
HK:
In most cases, people just stare at me. Some people are truly shocked, some are bewildered and others simply fascinated. But there are very many people who look at me.

What is your favourite thing to do in your free time?
HK:
In my free time I enjoy rapping, but I cannot rap, I like to sing, but I am not a great singer, I enjoy watching horror films, I love to read, I like going for walks in nature, I like to hang out with my friends and family and I love to eat!

Instagram Community Member:
Does it make you feel uncomfortable when someone asks questions about your beard?
HK:
I am not offended when people ask me questions. I think that it is good because I can explain to them why I am like this. I think it is the arrogance of other people and their looks on the streets which really offend me, and perhaps also when people laugh.

Instagram Community Member:
What is your favourite food?
HK:
My absolute favourite foods are lasagna, pasta, pizza, quesadillas, burritos,... and many more! But I have a weakness for sweet things so I love desserts.

Instagram Community Member:
Which German city do you like the most?
HK:
Definitely Berlin, because I love the culture. I think that the mix of different people is astounding and I love all the tourist attractions, the restaurants,... there is so much more that I want to see but up till now I have only seen a few places in Germany and only spent a few days in Hamburg. But I would definitely like to travel around and see lots more and I am simply so grateful to be here.

Instagram Community Member:
When did you realise you had become a body positivity activist?
HK:
I cannot say precisely or give the date I became a body positivity activist. I think I had passionately spoken about the topic and realised that so many people were struggling with their self confidence that I wanted to help them. This made it authentic.

Instagram Community Member:
How do you wish the world would be in 5 years time?
HK:
In five years I would like to live in a world where we can just love ourselves how we are and live in a world where we are all celebrated, no matter how our bodies look.

Instagram Community Member:
How can a woman have a beard?
HK:
This is due to the fact that I have PCOS, or polycystic ovary syndrome, which affects one in five people with ovaries. And because my level of androgens is a little higher, I am able to grow a lovely beard.
