How To Use Eyeliners

Makeup. For me, it takes many forms, from a mask I wear on a bad day, a mood I want to evoke to a costume for a special event. It’s also acted as therapy at times, taking my mind away from the every day, painting a blank canvas and marvelling at the final result. But as many makeup enthusiasts with no professional training will agree, it doesn’t always come easy and as with most things, practice makes perfect.

The beauty of makeup is that creativity and expression are key with the possibilities being endless. However, there are some techniques that are timeless and elevate your look to the next level - like the ever tricky art of lining the windows to your soul.

Eyeliner for many is makeup Everest. One false move and classic cat-eye soon become two very different (and slightly wonky) lines across your lid leaving you sighing ‘well that will have to do’ as you leave the house. With the launch of 12 bold and beautiful eyeliners in the #LushMakeup range as well as the release of our professional quality and 100% vegan makeup brushes, the time felt right to draw the line under my mediocre methods and get some lessons in liner.

I headed to the How To Use Eyeliner video shoot with the Lush Makeup Team to get a taste of the 12 shades launching and learn how to apply 3 staple eyeliner looks from Head Makeup Artist, Megan Edwards.

Swatch’ya doing?

First things first, colour. Before we got to the nitty-gritty of eyeliner application at the shoot I had taken a moment in the office to get some colour swatches on my hands to see what I was working with. I was happy to discover that each liner was super pigmented for amazing colour pay off and each one glided seamlessly across my skin thanks to the inclusion of organic jojoba & Fairtrade aloe vera gel in the formula.

With shades named after shells found on co-founder, Rowena Bird’s travels the colours are a makeup enthusiasts dream. Four metallics (Calico, Murex, Venus & Junonia), shades of green and blue (Tellin, Cowrie, Ceriths, Periwinkle, Jujube, Abalone) and a classic black liner (Auger).

Don’t just wing it!

At the shoot, I spent some time with Megan to catch her in action as she added the glam to our gorgeous bunch of models and find out her easy to understand top tips on creating 3 classic eyeliner looks. We had decided to tackle classic cat eye for hooded lids, simple liner and blended-out liner to help you get the most out of your new eyeliners. Here’s what I learnt:

Classic cat eye for hooded lids

What you’ll need: A large angled liner brush like Wing It Brush

Step 1: Draw a line or dot outwards or upwards from the outer corner of the eye (this should be where you want your liner to finish).

Step 2:  Turn the brush around so the long side is on the outside. Start at the line or dot you have just drawn and sweep the brush inwards towards the upper lash line. Move the brush forwards and backwards until you have drawn along your entire lash line.

Step 3: You should be left with a triangle gap at the outer corner of the eye. Use the brush to fill this in and repeat as you wish until you get the intensity you want!

Simple liner

What you’ll need: A small liner brush like Get In There Brush

Step 1: Dip the brush in your chosen lush eyeliner

Step 2: Keep your eye open and look down into a mirror. Draw a line starting on the inside and following your natural lash line stopping where your lashes finish.

Step 3: Repeat steps to define the line and make the colour more intense!

Blended liner

What you’ll need: A small blending brush like Hey Big Blender Brush

Step 1: Dip your brush into your desired shade

Step 2: Close your eyes and pat the product directly onto the centre of the eyelid.

Step 3: Using your ring finger to gently tap around the edges to blend and sheer out the colour around the eyelid. TADA!

Now it’s your turn, grab your tools then share your luscious liner looks using #LushMakeup!
