How we make bath bombs

Have you ever wondered how to make a Lush bath bomb? They're not just sugar, spice and all things nice you know. Since their creation by Lush co-founder and product inventor Mo Constantine 30 years ago, bath bombs have made waves in bathtubs all over the world - so we don’t blame you for being curious

If you’re looking for the secret to bath bombs with benefits for body and mind, that champion ethical practises, and truly stand the test of time, then you’ve come to the right place. Here’s the inside scoop on all things fizzing and whizzing.

A generous dollop of handmade enthusiasm.

Handmade cosmetics are what Lush are famous for. From Mo Constantine pressing the very first bath bomb in her garden shed, to the 15.1 million bath bombs that splashed out of the UK factory and into your baths last year, handmade is what Lush do best.

With up to 600 people making bath bombs during the busiest period, Lush strive for happy people making happy bath bombs. The physical process of creating bath bombs is put into the hands of compounders rather than machines, meaning they gain the skills and expertise to grow within the business. With a huge range to choose from, Lush bath bombs are as unique and creative as the people who make them, meaning there’s a bath bomb to suit every mood.

How It's Made: Incredible Mum | Lush Kitchen

A pinch of trial and error.

Lush believe in the right to make mistakes, lose everything and start again. Let’s face it - there’s been a few ballistic bombshells, but where would we be today without a little experimentation?

Bath bombs come in all shapes and sizes, with different colours, smells and extra surprises all mixed into a base of sodium bicarbonate and citric acid. These fantastical fizzers can turn your average soak into a playground for the senses. We love to push the boundaries of bathing beyond what you’ve ever experienced before, and while things don’t always go right first time, when things work, they really work. It’s this unique process that created technicolour fizzers such as The Experimenter, Goddess and best seller Intergalactic, paving the way for bath art masterpieces.

One large scoop of community.

From the forums to #LushLabs, the Lush community has always been the driving force behind the products that get made. As the company has grown and developed over the years, so too has the community, and Lush now spread far and wide across the globe.
