It’s easy being green: The (nearly) zero-waste party guide

No one likes a rubbish party. Thankfully, there are ways to raise the roof without relying on single-use plastics, throwaway cutlery and disposable decorations. So, if you want to cut the crap, here are some ways to party like you just don’t care (while actually caring a lot).

Big package, small footprint

Everyone likes a nice package, especially when it’s eco-friendly. Thankfully, every Lush giftbox is made from recycled and recyclable materials that have been turned into something fancy. Tins and boxes can be reused to store your goodies (or even for future presents if you’re feeling thrifty), the EcoFlo packing peanuts can be composted and even the paper and ribbons are sourced responsibly, meaning your present has as little environmental impact as possible.

Tied up with a bow

When it comes to wrapping paper, why not think outside the box? Made from recycled plastic bottles or organic cotton, Knot Wraps add a personal touch, and are ideal to use again and again. Once the gift’s unwrapped, your fabric wrap makes a stylish hair accessory, great makeshift shopping bag, or even a handy lunch box - you could even layer up multiple Knot Wraps and play pass the parcel. These flexible fabrics really have a plethora of uses that go far beyond the gift.

Not just a throw-away

Resist the urge to splurge on disposable plates and cutlery - many of these aren’t recyclable once they are dirty. The best alternative is to use what you already have, but if you don’t have enough plates to go around, there are companies that rent out tableware fairly affordably. If that’s not the right fit for your festivities, however, here are some other options to look into.

Swap out paper or plastic plates for biodegradable palm leaf options or invest in some sturdy bamboo fibre plates that you can use a few times. Biodegradable cutlery is also an easy swap for plastic knives and forks. Last, but not least, why not buy and personalise some fun glasses that your attendees can take home as a party favour?

Don’t be a sucker

As a kid, drinking with a straw was always way more fun than directly from the glass, wasn’t it? While we all know that plastic straws are bad for the environment, thankfully, in recent months, many bars, pubs, and clubs are switching to paper or biodegradable ones. If, however, you’re not a fan of the soggy variety, there are plenty of eco-friendly alternatives you can pop out on the table at your next housewarming party.

Deck the halls (and the living room)

Let’s be honest, it’s not a party without decorations is it? Thankfully there are some great environmentally-kind options out there to help brighten up the place.

Sadly, for balloon lovers, these party staples are pretty bad for the planet. The plastic can pollute seas and rivers and the string can ensnare wildlife. Stick to the biodegradable kind (yes, they do exist!).

And, instead of throwing those lovely cards in the bin, why not repurpose them? Turn your cards into a hanging garland, gift tags, or placeholders to give them a new lease of life.

Got some scrap fabric that needs using up? Get thready to party with some handmade, upcycled bunting! You could even go the extra mile and repurpose that ribbon from your Lush gift.

If some of these options sound good, but you can’t be bothered with the clean up, why not just book your party with Lush this year instead?
