Looking for the future of music? John Robb has found it in a band called Glove
Glove is the perfect band for the now.
They take these snips and shards of sound and create their own future. Their eyes are painted blue with thick make-up. They are wild and tribal They are dancing on the bones of rock ‘n’ roll.
Glove are wild poets.
Shamanic dancers with a new beat that you can dance to as well as think and feel alive. Glove can somehow turn the room of random punters into an ecstatic party with a brand new sound.
Glove is going to make a lot of noise.
Get into them now before everyone else does.
Me and Glove are sat in the back of a car in the fast changing landscapes of Manchester’s vibrant city centre talking about another future and another music in a different kitchen.
Whilst the new Manchester erupts from the old all around us, Glove are building their own tower blocks of thrilling sound. This is a conversation that races along in a parallel universe to the Trump world we are being crushed by - this is not a world of narcissism and blubber - this is a world of hope and ideas and a band who have constructed a soundtrack for it.
I’ve just released their debut single, ‘Escalator’, and I’m gushing…
‘It’s impossible to see anything as vibrant or totally original as this but Glove are captivating, fiercely intelligent and can turn any room into a physical and mental hoe down.
“With the same sort of poetic skree as prime-time Patti Smith that makes you think, and feel alive; and minimalist stripped down music played on one bass and one drum they deliver an invigorating set of emotions and from the minute I saw them I knew I had to release this, their debut EP.’
Glove is collaboration between artists SloSilver and Stephanie Finegan. I first saw them play at Focus Wales festival a year ago. Every now and then, at one of these music showcase events, you see a band that changes your life.
A mesmerising, talismanic piece of magic that is beyond.
Glove is that band.
Two wild painted people who turn music inside out and reinvent the wheel and who are oozing art, poetry and a musical brilliance that sets your mind racing and your heart pounding. There’s a stripped down basic sound – rhythm comes from a pounding tom tom, played against a bass or in other songs a scratchy guitar.
It’s pounding and highly effective – most of the songs are given a running bass line backbone and the minimalistic now wave combination is perfect for the poetry in motion of the vocals that switch between volumes of wild eyed beat poetry and stunningly sung vocal lines.
The songs follow no rules. There are no reference pints. It’s utterly original.
You type out words like Patti Smith or The Slits but that’s lazy old man thinking.
Glove are the here and now.
Glove are the future.
