Knot Wraps celebrate the ancient Japanese tradition of furoshiki, which uses techniques similar to origami, to wrap an item in a reusable piece of fabric either for the purpose of carrying it around or giving it as a beautifully bespoke gift. When reused as bags, passed forward as gifts or simply worn as scarves they have the benefit of reducing waste and creating a culture of reusing and upcycling.
But can using something like a Knot Wrap really make a difference? Well let’s take a look at the bigger picture. Each year billions of plastic bags end up as litter; reusable bags, such as furoshiki can help reduce the impact on the environment. In 2013 the British Government (backed by research from recycling advisors WRAP), claimed the amount of wrapping paper thrown away over the Christmas period in the UK would reach the moon, that’s almost 239,000 miles, and that's just for one day of the year! What about all the birthdays and gift buying occasions that fill the other 364 days?
So instead of gift wrap, Lush are championing reusable Knot Wraps; sumptuously soft yet strong pieces of fabric that are so flexible they can wrap, rewrap and be restyled into so many other wonderful things.
Sustainability is a company-wide priority that flows through our products. Working with suppliers that respect the environment, as well as the animals and people living there. The Knot Wraps at Lush are sourced in three innovative ways. Working with a women’s cooperative in India called Re-wrap, which equips rural women with sewing skills, giving them the opportunity to practice traditional crafts in a safe, clean environment with increased financial security, and these professional artisans use 100% organic cotton to sew their wonderful re-usable wraps. A company in the north of England provides us with vintage wraps for people to reuse and fall in love with, the great thing about vintage Knot Wraps is that they take no energy to produce as it is all about reusing the beautiful designs that are already in existence. And finally, some of the Knot Wraps at Lush have been created from recycled plastic bottles that have been melted down and spun into thread.
The re-usable, re-workable Knot Wrap can completely replace the need for conventional wrapping paper and/or a carrier bag if you choose to embrace it. You’re not only helping to consume less of the planet’s valuable resources with these wrapping cloths but you’re potentially getting more (a lot more) out of it in return.
So whether you’re carrying, covering or creating something completely unique, a Knot Wrap won’t just make things pretty, if cherished and reused it can make a positive impact on the environment. How many novelty wrapping sheets and 5p carrier bags can say that?
