The Mighty Shampoo Bar

Economical, naked and self-preserving; what’s not to love about solid shampoo bars?

Small but perfectly formed, they're ideal for travelling. These long-lasting, light little bundles of shampoo are concentrated, so there won't be a carry on at the airport if there's one in your carry-on. A single bar could take you around the world in 80 washes, but why wait until you’re going on holiday to use them?

Bottles versus bars

These highly-concentrated handfuls, packed with powerful natural ingredients and essential oils, do the job of three 250g bottles of liquid shampoo. Each mighty bar gives you 80-100 washes (depending on hair shape, thickness and length) and is a lot lighter and slimmer than a shampoo bottle.

You create a smaller carbon footprint when washing with these compact latherers too; one lorry full of solid shampoo bars holds roughly the same number of washes as fifteen lorries filled with liquid shampoo!

How to use

Wet your hair.

Stroke the solid shampoo down it a few times to lather it up, or rub the bar between your hands to create a lather.

Gently massage it into the scalp and hair, as you would with a liquid shampoo.

Rinse out and condition if your hair would like a little extra loving.

Leave the bar out to air dry, ready for its next use.

So there you have it! Why not give one a whirl and share your thoughts on it? If you want to learn more about the creation of the unique and resourceful solid shampoo bar, check out the book ‘Danger! Cosmetics To Go’.

I'd love to try shampoo bars but with so many to choose from how do you find the right one for your hair?

On #myplasticfreeyear and this is one of the first things that I am looking at reducing - my plastic shampoo and conditioner footprint. What a great start! Love my new shampoo and conditioner bar. Thank you for the plastic free packaging!

I took ashamed bar with me whilst travelling for 15months it lasted me along time, and was distraught when it ran out. But I heard through the grape vine that there was a lush in Panama city. So I went on a mission and got another. It's the perfect companion for travelling light weight and lasts ages.

I absolutely love this shampoo bar! I was purchasing the Superbalm scalp treatment and read about this in one of the reviews. I was a bit unsure about using a solid bar on my hair but boy was I impressed when I actually tried it. It soaps up really quickly as soon as it is run over wet hair and hair is left squeaky clean. Wonderful feeling on my scalp and as a psoriasis sufferer this was a massive bonus for me as my scalp gets hot and sore. I didn't realise you could buy a tin however I use a small coffee cup saucer which is ceramic to store it on, I dab the bar dry on my towel after use and keep on that. I don't have any problems with it sticking as long as it is dried off after use. It definitely lasts well and Is brilliant for travelling. A fantastic find for me and all because I read a review for another product!

Is the shampoo bio-degradable?

I am completely sold on solid hair care! I love the bars that are so easy to store, they smell great and there are so many it's easy to find one that works. I have very thick hair so I usually rub the bar directly onto my hair for a very full lather, I can use my shampoo bars quicker this way but I still get more uses and better results than with liquid shampoos.

I love the shampoo bars. Finding one that was gentle on my sensitive scalp was tricky but Trichomania is my go-to. I am still tempted to try the others and find I end up alternating with Trichomania to get the best of both worlds! I love that I can use just enough. I always find that with liquid shampoo and thick hair getting even coverage can be difficult. In terms of drying I have cut two pieces of j-cloth the same size as the lid of the shampoo bar tin. I place the bar in the tin on the first piece of cloth and once one side has dried I turn it over onto the second piece of cloth to dry the 'bottom' of the bar. Once it has dried I stick the bar in the tin and rinse the bits of cloth in the sink to keep them clean of any soapy residue. I have even cut a piece of cloth big enough to completely wrap around the bar for when I travel so it doesn't get stick in the tin if I don't have time to dry it out before I have to pack it away. Oh... another bonus it means I can avoid paying to check my suitcase in when I fly because it isn't a liquid. Saves time, money and does a better job! :)
