Henna is a plant native to the Middle East, which has been used since ancient times to dye the skin and hair.
Unlike synthetic hair dyes, which penetrate the cuticle and enter the cortex to change your hair colour, henna works like a varnish, coating every strand in an extra layer of protection and vivid colour. The resulting shade depends on those already in your hair, meaning that the results are unique to you and can be layered up with repeat applications. Though henna is permanent, it will fade over time so new growth at the roots will appear subtle.
It is the type of natural ingredient used that creates the four different shades of organic hair dye available at Lush. All of the henna bricks are 100% natural, made from the finest quality Persian henna, Fair Trade, organic cocoa butter and ingredients selected to bring out different tones:
Rouge draws on red henna and fresh organic lemon juice to give a vibrant, fiery finish, as well as lifting lighter shades.
Marron turns to ground coffee and fresh, organic lemon juice to create shiny chestnut colour with autumnal tones.
Brun contains indigo and ground coffee for deep, chocolate browns.
Noir is the darkest shade, containing indigo for glossy, blue-black tones.
The dried leaves of the henna plant are ground into a powder then mixed with cocoa butter. The bricks therefore acting like a deep, conditioning treatment to add weight to flyaways, smooth static and promote gloss.
“In my opinion, the henna brick is one of our best inventions,” says Mark Constantine, Lush co-founder and expert trichologist. “If you want a natural hair colour, there’s nothing like it.”
